Driving effective team communication
Supporting leadership teams to raise awareness and consider their communication styles and approaches using Insights Discovery
Qaimgo’s Richard Bennett recently spent time in rural Malawi with sport and education NGO, Bhubesi Pride Foundation (BPF). Richard founded the NGO in Malawi in 2017 following the success of BPF UK’s work in multiple African countries.
BPF Malawi – through strategic intention and a big team effort – has experienced significant organisational change in recent years with new staff joining, expanded operations and a huge increase in program participation. There’s been times when the team wasn’t fully aligned. Sometimes team members were perceived as ‘too informal’ – when precise policies were needed… or as ‘controlling’ – when focus, drive and a competitive spirit was the intention.
In our sessions together, we focused on optimising communication techniques. Using the team’s personal Discovery profiles and by picking out each other’s communication “dos” and “don’ts”, we played “be the detective” and had a powerful discussion about how to better understand each other’s preferences.
- How might team members approach certain conversations?
- How might their approaches be received by others?
We saw big gains in a short space of time: Empathy; increased appreciation for each others’ differences; and less friction. And most importantly, a clear understanding of the different perspectives and ‘lenses’ teammates bring to their interactions and their work.
